Hopi Ear Candling

A Native-American Indian Practice for Relaxation & Ear Health

A treatment using Hopi ear candles is a gentle, relaxing experience that may also be helpful for a range of problems affecting the ear and sinuses.  This therapy is based on Hopi Indian rituals, initially performed as part of an initiation or medicinal ceremony.  Today, it is used to support the ear’s self-cleaning ability and to alleviate some of the symptoms associated with sinusitis, hay fever, catarrh, tinnitus, reduced hearing due to excess ear wax, or an imbalance of ear pressure due to flying.  An assisting person is required to perform this treatment for safety reasons.  The assistance will enable you to relax more deeply during the session.

Hopi ear candling involves placing the base of a lit candle into your ear and holding it for about 8 to 10 minutes, or until the flame reaches the safety mark near the base of the tube.  During the treatment, you will hear a soft crackling noise and a gentle warming sensation coming from the candle itself.  Once a candle has burnt down to the safety line, it is extinguished in a glass of water.  It is possible to open the candle and the end of the treatment to see how much wax has been removed.  An ear candling session will always treat both ears, each ear with a new candle.  When both ears have been treated, a rest of 15 to 30 minutes is recommended.

Biosun Hopi ear candles are my preferred choice for naturopathic treatment.  Each candle is a tube made from unbleached cotton, dipped and set in beeswax, honey and a range of herbs such as sage and chamomile.  There is a security filter at the base of the candle, which makes sure that any wax extracted from the ear remains inside the tube.  While ear candling is suitable for most people, the following conditions are not recommended for an ear candling treatment:

  • Grommets, drains or tubes fitted in the ear

  • Cochlear implants

  • Perforated eardrum

  • Acute ear or sinus infection

  • Preauricular cysts

  • Recent head or neck injury

  • Past allergic reaction to any ingredients in the candle
